Gabriel Fries, PhD

Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Texas Health Science Center

Gabriel R. Fries, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. His research applies molecular biology to psychiatry, with a focus on the epigenetic basis of severe mood disorders, including bipolar disorder, suicide, and the molecular mechanisms of stress. Leveraging clinical datasets, post-mortem brain tissue, and stem-cell-derived neurons, Fries explores the genetic and epigenetic underpinnings of these illnesses. As a Metabolic Psychiatry Scholar, he aims to identify the link between dietary and metabolic parameters and suicide risk.

Fabiano Gomes, MD, PhD

Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences at McMaster University

Fabiano Gomes, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences at McMaster University and an academic psychiatrist at St Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. His research focuses on bipolar disorder and treatment-resistant depression, with a specialization in the influence of metabolic health and lifestyle. He works to translate evidence-based interventions into routine clinical practice. As a Metabolic Psychiatry Scholar, he aims to establish an integrated Metabolic Psychiatry Program. This initiative will implement a comprehensive model that combines therapeutic nutritional ketosis and lifestyle interventions with rigorous translational research to improve routine clinical care.

Jacek Kolacz, PhD

Research Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University College of Medicine

Jacek Kolacz, PhD, is a Research Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. His research focuses on how the brain and body coordinate to shape emotional responses to stress and threats, with the ultimate goal of improving clinical interventions. He uses wearable sensors to noninvasively track physiological activity, providing insights into how chronic threat responses shape emotions and bodily functions. As a Metabolic Psychiatry Scholar, he will investigate whether combining cognitive processing therapy with ketogenic therapy increases treatment effectiveness for individuals with chronic threat responses, focusing especially on those living with PTSD.

Dr. Iain Cambpell

I can genuinely say that becoming a Baszucki Research Fellow in Metabolic Psychiatry has been one of the best things to happen in my life. It has allowed me use to both my research experience and my lived experience as a means to investigate new metabolic treatments for serious mental illness, and to see many patients benefit mentally and physically from this work.”

Iain Campbell, PhD

Baszucki Group Metabolic Psychiatry Research Fellow, University of Edinburgh
